Esports program was officially launched at the three campuses of the University Of South Florida (USF). Although it was formally under the Recreation and Wellness department and USF, it is now recognized as an official program of the University.
With this, the program is now eligible for funding opportunity by the student union government.
The Coordination of Recreation and Wellness Programs at University of South Florida’s Sarasota-Manatee campus, Bart Stucker said in an official statement that “Esports is an opportunity for us to bridge and build a community of not only competitive gamers and casual gamers, but people who are just generally interested in video games.”
The university will create a new website for the program later in the month and also include “year-round intramural schedules, student leadership opportunities, information regarding USF’s competitive teams, and details on how to get involved.”
Kristofer Newsome, USF’s Tampa campus sport club coordinator mentioned that “the students really miss being on campus and having that sense of community, Esports provides the opportunity for us to still come together and continue doing what we love.”
The new program is currently hosting competitive activities for different games including PS, Xbox and PC. They also broadcast competitions live on Twitch Channel.
