Betting and Gaming Council urges Welsh Government to Protect more than 2,000 jobs

The Welsh Government has been supported to ensure employment by reconsidering business rate alleviation to incorporate high road wagering shops, bingo lobbies and gambling clubs to assist them with managing to the effect of Covid-19.

Michael Dugher, chief executive of the Betting and Gaming Council, warned in a letter to Welsh finance minister Rebecca Evans that more than 2,000 jobs in the country are at risk unless urgent action is taken.

A month ago, the UK Government declared the extension of its Business Rates Retail Discount so it secured betting shops, bingo halls and gambling clubs. It implies that they will get 100 percent business rates help in acknowledgment of the way that they have needed to close their entryways as a major aspect of the national exertion to handle the spread of the coronavirus.

Nonetheless, not at all like in England, the Welsh Government’s version of the approach specifies that it doesn’t make a difference to betting shops.

Wales has in excess of 300 wagering shops, in addition to four gambling clubs, all of which face budgetary ruin except if the Welsh Government steps in. Different pieces of the hospitality, leisure and media outlets have accepted help, including bars, eateries, films and nightclubs.

Over the entire of the UK, the managed betting industry contributes £3.2bn per year to the Treasury, and furthermore contributes £350 million to horse racing and between £120 million and £200 million to the UK travel industry.

In his letter, Mr Dugher stated: “Without assistance with business rates relief, similar to that offered to other sectors in Wales, including other parts of the hospitality, leisure and entertainment industries, there is a real danger that betting shops and casinos will permanently close leading to the direct loss of over 2000 jobs in Wales.”

The BGC chief executive added: “We represent the regulated betting and gaming industry and as a body are committed to driving up standards across the sector.

“In any case, in Wales, the industry is in danger of experiencing a body blow which it might never recuperate except if the Government in Cardiff acts.

“Betting shops, bingo halls and gambling clubs in England were tossed a life saver when the UK Government reported it was expanding its business rates comfort plan to cover their premises too, perceiving the commitment they make to the economy, to sport and the indispensable part they are playing in the national exertion and in networks to adapt to the infection.

“I don’t for a second feel that the Welsh Government is stating that 2,000 laborers in Wales who are employed in the monitored betting industry are less deserving of the help they get in England, however we crucially need a reconsideration of rates. These 2,000 occupations are dedicated people with bills to pay and families to think about. Their job merits just as much as somebody doing likewise work in England.”
